An additional tip to engage folks who comment, is to take the time to drop them an email. I don't always take the time to do it, but find when I do that person is more likely to come back and comment again.

Chris, I agree completely. The idea isn't to be a "bad boy" of your industry, simply to not be overly concerned with pleasing everybody. By taking a stand you show you're passionate about what you do and you're inviting the possibility of a counter-point. A Blog that's loaded with comments like "great post!" and "I couldn't agree more!" might be great for your ego, but it makes for boring conversation.

Tony, thanks for the comment. The ideas will definitely work for TypePad... they'll work for any blogging platform. The plugins would be different, but the ideas -- the basis behind all small business marketing -- will work on any blogging system.

Thanks Janis. The reason social media marketing works is because you can reach a large number of potential clients quickly and in a central location. Rather than having to go out and find those clients, they are already built in... the most successful marketers will use and are using a combination of traditional marketing strategies and social media marketing.

Hey, great blog entry. I like your idea of blogging about controversial topics, but I have a feeling you should do it sparingly lest you become known for being negative and people discount what you say. You also run the risk of fanboy attacks--which may increase your SE ranking, but could also drive away people who don't want to participate in those discussions... just my 0.02 CHF :)
